Installing a wood-burning stove in a sauna or bathhouse requires strict compliance with fire safety regulations. One of the key aspects is the distance between the wooden cladding (paneling) and the stove body. Incorrect placement can not only damage the materials but also pose a fire risk. The Greus team provides professional recommendations.

Why is a safe distance important?

Wooden paneling is a flammable material that readily absorbs heat. With prolonged heating, wood can reach its self-ignition temperature (approximately 300 °C) even without direct contact with an open flame. Therefore, when installing the stove, it is necessary to take thermal insulation into account and maintain the minimum safe distances specified in the technical documentation.

Recommended distances

Without thermal insulation:

  • From the side walls of the stove to the wooden paneling: from 50 cm.
  • From the rear wall of the stove to the paneling: from 50–60 cm.
  • From the flue pipe to a wooden ceiling or wall: at least 50 cm.

These values are general. A specific stove model may have different technical requirements – always check the manufacturer's instructions.

Reducing the distance using protective elements

To reduce safe distances and save space in the sauna, the following are used:

  1. Heat-reflective protective shields made of stainless steel
  • The distance from the wooden paneling can be reduced to 25–30 cm.
  • They are installed with a gap of 1–3 cm from the surface.
  1. Basalt boards (non-combustible thermal insulation)
  • They are placed under metal protective shields.
  • They further reduce the risk of the wood heating up.
  1. Fireclay or ceramic wall tiles
  • A decorative and safe solution.
  • They retain heat well.

What you must not do:

  • Place the stove directly against the wooden paneling, even if it is heat-resistant.
  • Ignore the need for ventilation around the stove.
  • Use aluminum foil as the only protection – it only has a reflective effect and is not a non-combustible material.
