Saunum: The Technology That Changes the Way You Sauna

The Estonian manufacturer Saunum has come up with a solution that eliminates this problem at its root - and in doing so, redefines what a sauna can do.
A Problem Everyone Knows: Uneven Heat
Physics is relentless. Warm air rises, cold air sinks. In a traditional sauna, this means the temperature difference between ceiling and floor commonly reaches 20 to 40 °C.
The result?
- The body heats unevenly
- Stifling heat at the ceiling, cold at the floor
- Pouring water on the stones creates an unpleasant blast of heat
- Breathing becomes difficult and sessions cannot be extended
This phenomenon is called thermal stratification - and it is the main reason many people dislike the sauna or can only stay for a short while.
How Saunum Solves This Problem
Saunum developed its patented Air-Blending System in cooperation with Tallinn University of Technology. The principle is simple, but its effect is fundamental.
The integrated fan:
- Draws in the overheated air from the upper part of the cabin
- Mixes it inside the device with cooler, oxygen-rich air from the floor
- Returns soft, homogeneous steam to the cabin, evenly distributed throughout the space
The temperature difference between floor and ceiling thus drops from a typical 20-30 °C to just a few degrees. According to the manufacturer's measurements, the system equalises the cabin temperature by more than 60%.
What does this mean in practice? You feel the heat evenly from head to toe. Pouring water on the stones no longer creates a stifling blast. Breathing is easy. And you can stay in the sauna significantly longer - calm and relaxed.
More Than Even Heat: Health Benefits
Himalayan Salt and Halotherapy
Most Saunum models include a reservoir of Himalayan salt spheres, positioned directly in the air stream. During operation, negative salt ions with a documented halotherapeutic effect are released into the cabin:
- They purify the air in the cabin
- They soothe the respiratory tract
- They support skin regeneration
- They promote deeper, calmer sleep after the sauna
Because the spheres are placed in the air stream, the ions spread throughout the entire room - not just locally above the heater.
More Oxygen, Longer Sessions
By blending the layers, oxygen-richer air from the floor reaches the upper part of the cabin. The sauna experience is thus more pleasant and less exhausting - suitable even for those who tolerate traditional hot saunas poorly.
Aromatherapy That Works Differently
Saunum fragrances are developed specifically to work with the climate system. As they pass through the device, the essences are evenly distributed throughout the cabin, not just above the heater. The aromatherapeutic effect is therefore more intense and more pleasant.
